Medical coding (like medical billing) is also a very important
career field to be in when it comes to careers in the healthcare industry. Medical coding and medical billing
are very similar; yet are also different.
Most people that train in medical billing will also train in
medical coding.
Each medical service such as medical tests; doctor visits;
surgeries; and other procedures will require a special code to be entered for proper billing.. It is vital
that the proper codes are used for each medical service that is provided!
There are CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes that exist
for each type of service such as an office visit, an injection, an x-ray, right on to major surgery.
International Disease Codes (ICD) is the number systems assigned for diagnoses, even minor patient
complaints. The combination of using codes such as; ICD and CPT will tell the payer what was wrong with the
patient and the type of service(s) that was performed.
There is high job security for Medical Coders! Every medical facility
that performs a medical service is required to have medical coders on staff to ensure that each task is
properly coded. This is vital to ensure the patient record and the patient bills are
correct.
Like medical billing; medical coders usually work
on-site. There are some medical coders that do work from home after working for the medical
facility for a period of time. While the percentage of
medical coders working from their home office has increased over the last several years; it is important to
realize that you most likely will work at the job location when starting out new in this career
field.
Those that work in the Medical Coding career field usually will
start out around $35K a year. This is just an
average. Some medical coders have earned more and some have earned less.
Many medical transcriptionist have also learned medical
coding. This is because they already know the medical language and have experience in typing
the medical reports. Medical coders will review the medical report that is transcribed by the MT to then
use the proper codes to bill for the services provided. An MT that also knows
how to do medical coding can do very well in this career field.
Medical coders can earn up to $60K per year or more with several
years of experience. This is a career field that you can continue to grow in.
If you have taken both the Medical Billing and Medical Coding
Courses (or the combo) and have passed; you can then take the certification exam for the CBCS (Certified
Billing and Coding Specialist). While you will receive a certificate with our course; we do not give the
Certification Exam. These are not normally given directly by the school. However; we will provide you with
the information on how to take the exam after completion of our course. The exam usually costs between
$225.00 and $275.00.
Once you have completed the
course and passed you will receive a certificate in Medical Coding. Students have 12 months to complete the
course at their own pace.
